The second single from We Are Scientists’ upcoming album ‘Barbara’, ‘Nice Guys’ opens with rattling raucous guitars, a summery melody drifting over the jumpy guitar parts. It’s what we’ve come to expect from the band - a brilliantly catchy and competently crafted pop song.
The chorus is perhaps slightly repetitive, with the same lyrics repeated for what seems like the bulk of the song, but the precise and intricate nature of the guitar work in the verses more than makes up for it. With lyrics such as “It’s fine to say this isn’t a game when you’ve already lost it”, the song holds an air of hopelessness about it, a wonderful contrast to the bright melody.
It’s a simple song – there’s nothing revolutionary about it and it sticks comfortably to the basics, but that’s the way We Are Scientists seem to work. ‘Nice Guys’ is a prime example of a catchy, well written guitar driven pop song. It’s the We Are Scientists we all know and love from the days of With Love and Squalor’, and that’s always welcome.
