United Fruit crawl out of the abyss with ‘Where the Sun Beats Down’
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from United Fruit. One of Scotland’s best-kept secrets (after deep-fried mars bars went mainstream), United Fruit are readying a new album, ‘Eternal Return’, for 13th May.New song ‘Where the Sun Beats Down’ captures their appeal in an instant. For the unacquainted, the group find curious triumph in the darkest of situation. Iskandar Stewart opens with the line “I’m in the deepest, darkest hole I can find,” and the rest of the song finds him crawling out of this grim space. There’s hurt and there’s fear lining the seams, but United Fruit manage to make tragedy out to be life-affirming. It’s a tricky skill, but it’s furthered by the kind of pummelling instrumentation you’d find on main stages the world over. Chances are, United Fruit won’t have to wait long for that kind of moment. They’re in the wings, ready for the next step.
