Chromeo - Fancy Footwork

Shame, this one could have been a big-haired and big-beated romp. As it is, it’s merely a sexy shuffle on the dancefloor.

Chromeo

are a right giggle. They’ve even got an intro which just repeats their name over and over again. It’s like a mantra beckoning our synthesiser superheroes to take up their comedy ladies legs and step - once again - in to the electro fray.

And after ‘She’s Into Control’ was a bit light on the ole musicianship but hilariously heavy on the pastiche, it’s a pretty brave thing to do. For the first few tracks it’s lucky they did. Moments of ‘Fancy Footwork’ are bursting with light, shimmy-worthy hooks and a fair lashing of electronic pomp. ‘Tenderoni’’s disco vibe is softened by bursts of quickfire vocoded rap, while ‘Fancy Footwork’ deserves nothing less than the title of dancefloor beast. Just as with the Boys Noize remix, it’s a popping delight with enough scuffed edges to disguise the weaker moments. Even the infuriating call of ‘two-step, two-step’ isn’t enough to stop the dance moves being well and truly broken out.

Unfortunately the story-based humour bursts on this one don’t have the same effect. ‘Bonafied Lovin’ might be so smooth it should come free with a Hugh Hefner style get-up, but this blazing 80s power ballad solo would be better in smaller amounts. And, just when they’ve nearly pulled it off, things go a little too far again. ‘Outta Sight’ comes over all referential with a big old ‘Ow!’ and more than a whiff of shell suit.

Shame, this one could have been a big-haired and big-beated romp. As it is, it’s merely a sexy shuffle on the dancefloor. Nice legs though. Switswoo.
