Hannah Diamond - Pink and Blue


Don’t freak out. This is not a joke. Yes, Hannah Diamond’s ‘Pink and Blue’ sounds positively offensive from the very beginning. And christ, for those who dislike sickly pop things, it doesn’t get any better. Maybe it’s satire? It’s almost definitely making some kind of holier-than-thou commentary on shiny, glossy music. Either that, or - like producer Sophie - it’s producing ‘chart hits’ like it’s a science, examining tiny details and cramming them into a weird-as-hell four minutes. ‘Pink and Blue’ sounds so false, so utterly infuriating, it actually ends up becoming one of the most insanely addictive tracks of the year. People will love it. People will absolutely fucking hate it with all their power. But that’s what makes it such a big deal.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Groves


London five-piece Groves use a wistful, acoustic take on music to their own advantage. What might be considered folky and standard-fare is amplified tenfold, skewed to the point where it sounds repetitive, with looped patterns careering away from all angles. Hushed vocals link up with barely-there whispers, lightly-plucked guitars. It’s a lullaby of a track, is ‘Paperback’, but on closer inspection it’ll keep you awake all night wondering how something so complex can be made to sound this effortless.
