He exists!
Jai Paul reportedly in the studio working on his debut album
XL producer Rodaidh McDonald has confirmed that there’s an album in the works.
This might rank up there with the world’s finest ‘tell us something we don’t know’ music news, but Jai Paul fans had every reason to believe he’d fallen off the face of the earth following last year’s Bandcamp “leak” of his debut album.
Turns out, he’s been in the studio all along. A debut album is officially in the works, according to XL’s in-house producer Rodaidh McDonald, the source being about as close as you can get to it actually being from the horse’s mouth.
Speaking to Dazed in a new interview, Rodaidh claims that material was being worked on as recently as “last week.”
“We finished it, whether he wants to put it out or not I don’t know. It’s just a very long process for him I guess, he’s been working on (his album) for years. One of the things that I sort of identified was that he might benefit from some help using vocals. But his music sounds so good, he doesn’t need any help, I think he’s perfect.”
Last year an album’s worth of material appeared on Bandcamp, with the label XL issuing a statement the following day to claim that the songs had been leaked after Jai’s computer was stolen. Crack in the Road had previously linked the upload to Jai Paul’s own email address, making the whole scenario completely surreal and mysterious. Regardless, ‘Jai Paul’ did eventually rank in a fair few individual’s albums of the year list in 2013.
