Chvrches give storming set at Glastonbury 2016
The Scottish trio gave a thunderous performance over on the Other Stage.
A rainbow was cast over the Other Stage for The 1975’s performance earlier in the evening, but Chvrches get the stunning sunset. It’s been nearly a year since ‘Every Open Eye’ was released, and its tracks more than stand up to those from debut ‘The Bones Of What You Believe’.
Today Lauren Mayberry’s transition to an all-out pop star seems complete - she relentlessly thrashes around the stage for the whole hour, and commands the crowd impeccably - with the shy figure she cut at the start of the band’s career having totally disappeared.
As thunderous opening trios go, ‘Never Ending Circles’, ‘We Sink’ and ‘Keep You On My Side’ put the crowd firmly in Chvrches’ hands from the off, and the atmosphere trumps even that of Matt Healy and co. who preceded them.
Martin Doherty takes centre stage for ‘High Enough To Carry You Over’, and the finale of ‘Clearest Blue’ is undeniably anthemic, with the crowd responding appropriately. Doherty comments that it’s an honour to be playing before New Order - “one of the most important electronic bands of all time” - and sets like theirs proves that Chvrches are on the way to becoming one of the best Britain has.
