Chvrches bring the celebration to Latitude 2016

“We played this festival in 2013, in a small tent way over there,” Martin Doherty tells the crowd, gesturing into the distance. “This is very special for us.” Glancing around at the smiles on the faces gathered in Henham Park, there’s no doubt in the fact that this set was always going to be a winner.

Strutting across the stage front like they own the damn place - and let’s face it, from the moment they step under the stage lights to the moment they leave, that’s pretty much the case - Chvrches perform like superstars. Armed with an arsenal of hits, the motion never ceases as both band and crowd shake off every inhibition to the music thundering through the speakers.

Lauren Mayberry is on top form. Staring straight into the audience as she sings, it’s like every word was meant for the individual. Opener ‘Never Ending Circles’ ignites the wild side in everyone, and ‘Clearest Blue’ sees that energy run rampant.

“Hands up who was really sweaty today?” the frontwoman yells mid-set. “It’s okay. We’re not going to wash until the end of festival season.” Laughing and joking, the outfit are living out the dream, and the audience are thrilled to be a part of it.

Throughout their performance, Lauren twirls around the stage in dizzying delight, whilst ‘Under The Tide’ sees Martin Doherty with limbs flailing frenetically as he prowls the stage front.

By set closer ‘The Mother We Share’ everyone from six to sixty is climbing onto friends’ shoulders to make the most of the moment they’re in. Beaming from ear to ear, it’s impossible to tell who enjoyed the experience more.
