Introducing Get To Know… Girl In Red
Get ready to fall for Oslo-based Marie Ulven’s cute bedroom-pop songs.
Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… With two new acts a week, the feature pretty much does what it says on the tin: getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.
We’ve recently introduced you to Amsterdam’s Spill Gold, brilliant Stockholm-based newcomers Viagra Boys, Lala Lala, the Chicago-based project of Lillie West, Paris post-punks Rendez Vous and Brisbane’s Hatchie. Next up, we’re with Girl In Red, the project of 19-year-old Marie Ulven from Oslo.
Although Girl In Red began making music in 2017, its only this year that her music has started to gain attention. Her most popular video on YouTube, ‘girls’ - currently sitting at over a million views - is an upbeat slice of love-filled bedroom pop containing the adorable line: “They’re so pretty it hurts / I’m not talkin’ bout boys, I’m talkin’ bout girls.” Newest single ‘we fell in love in october’ is a little more contemplative, a slower-moving autumnal love song, coming along with a cute video, which you can watch below.
Get to know Girl In Red a little better with our Q&A below. Her first EP ‘chapter 1’ is out now.
Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.

What’s your earliest musical memory?
I think it was when I was six years old. I was gonna perform for the first time in my life and I got so nervous and my voice got really shaky, so I ran off stage crying (lol) and didn’t perform in years.
Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?
I wasn’t really inspired by any specific artist starting out. I was mainly just so intrigued by the idea of creating something.
You’re based in Oslo — what’s the music scene like there at the moment? Are there other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?
I really like the music scene in Oslo. There is a lot of different music here, and that keeps it interesting! I have several music friends here, and they all have their own projects and they are doing so well! I’m inspired by the whole idea of doing what you love, and pursuing the things you want in life. I’m cheering for them all!!
Who would be your dream collaborator?
I really wanna collab with King Princess, she’s so cool. I’d also like to write with Taylor Swift ‘cause she writes bangers.
Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to in 2019?
I’m really excited about releasing and making new music and I also wanna get better at producing! I’m also super stoked about touring with Conan Gray in the US for over a month! I’ve never toured before so it’s gonna be a really interesting experience.
If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?
Be gay and loud!
