First, the facts: Georgia and Caleb Nott have been making music for the best part of two years, but it wasn’t until the release of ‘Bridges’ that they decided to cause a stir. Chances are this is another double act in the vein or Wardell (the Spielberg siblings) or a trio of the Haim kind; family members who’ve been striking up a tune for goodness knows how long. Go-to producer for Lorde, Joel Little, also produced BROODS’ debut track. Its silky cloud-pop doesn’t sound a whole lot like anything on Lorde’s ‘Pure Heroine’ debut, but fans of chart-worthy stuff with odd idiosyncrasies will be immediately drawn to it.
The sister-half of BROODS made it to the finals of an international songwriting competition when she was living in hometown Nelson, New Zealand. 18 at the time, she recorded everything on Garageband. On the basis of their early material, Georgia and Caleb have polished things up a bit. ‘Never Gonna Change’ ticks all the alt-pop boxes while also bringing in harsh, abrasive production lifted straight out of a Clams Casino mixtape from the future. Like drinking too much Calpol in one sitting, BROODS deliver sweet doses with deadly intent.
