CHVRCHES

Neu CHVRCHES

Manic, unbounded pop from a Glasgow band of unbelievable potential.

Name

: Chvrches
Based: Glasgow
Listen: ‘The Mother We Share
Similar to: Purity Ring

The resurgence of squeaky-clean pop hasn’t been mere coincidence. It’s largely down to the inventive nature of the bands furthering the cause. Never have a talented singer and dynamic beatsmith combined so effectively than as AlunaGeorge; never has something so energetic and gut-bustingly real managed to sound chart-worthy, until Purity Ring came along and asked you to wrap your sternum around their glossy tones.

Chvrches add further bounce and top 40 zeal to the path their Canadian counterparts helped pave. They don’t belong on a respected independent label like 4AD, they belong on a major. Their home is MTV and a roomful of platinum discs. Two songs to date cement their place in potential pop stratosphere stardom. The most recent - ‘The Mother We Share’ - fuses Lauren Mayberry’s distinct Scottish accent with a vicious stampede of stop-start beats and hyperventilating synths. It’s manic, it’s unbounded. And because it contains a catchy chorus, it’s one of the best things Neu’s heard all year. Expect huge - HUGE - things from these guys.
