Often we find ourselves falling in love with subtle variations of an already-existing genre; a standardised model given a new curve or coat of gloss. But when something altogether new to your ears arrives all unrelenting and fresh-faced, you’re often too flummoxed at first to take it all in. Once the teething problems subside, you’re either left with a work of great depth or flash in the pan greatness. It’s where hype artists either fall ever so suddenly, or rise to greater heights.

Daughn Gibson isn’t an entire 50mph gale force wind of fresh air and new approaches, but he’s certainly doing more than “putting a spin” on the genres he entangles himself with; those being pop, electronic and country. Indeed, country. Gibson’s life as a truck driver is only evident in his husky draw, all battered and bruised with enough rich-in-detail stories to occupy your attention for nights on end. He takes this commanding voice and places it atop haunting atmospherics, each minimally inclined but fascinating under the gaze of a magnifying glass. Beats are clipped, short-lived. But Daughn varies his surroundings throughout debut album ‘All Hell’, opting for nostalgic, ‘Twin Peaks’-style synth patterns or ‘All The Beginning’’s, looped, analog aesthetic elsewhere. Samples lead the way but gluing it all together is that almighty, deep-toned croon. Most of the time, the album is sonically intense; breathtaking, even.



‘All Hell’ is released on White Denim (U.S.) and Mistletone (Aus, NZ) on 4th May, 2012.
