George Ezra
This guy flirts with the foundations of fancy folk, but he’s doing something more daring. Bleary eyed and whiskey soaked runs new song ‘Did You Hear The Rain’, which goes gospel in its attempt to lose all semblance of sanity. He’s a man on a mission, is young George.
Courtney Barnett
24-year-old Melbourne songwriter puts puntastic song titles (eg. ‘Avant Gardener’) alongside videos of old-school tennis clubs. Her intentions are tricky to pick up on, but she’s clearly inhabiting her own space, placing black-humoured observations about ‘meth labs’ and whatnot into sweet-natured songwriting.
Mapei
Stockholm based Mapei is the latest signing to Downtown Records, home of Gnarls Barkley, Santigold and other chart worthy boundary pushers. Debut ‘Don’t Wait’ has spread like wildfire, largely because it’s one of the most bewildering, surefire smash hits in yonks.
Apes & Horses
Managed by the same lot that looked after Wu Lyf, Apes & Horses don’t especially deal in cryptic messages and cult heroism. Still, the Parisians back their intentions up in echo-flecked grand statements, with latest track ‘Seas’ being a luscious sway of loved-up chants.
