It’s rare for a band’s debut track to attract so much attention in the form of speculators asking what the actual song’s about. Usually we’re marvelling at the “vibe” or the pace or the energy of a song. On this occasion, people are asking whether ‘Love In Vein’, the first track from London’s Drop Out Venus, is about: a) shooting heroin, or b) the art of fellatio.
Don’t Die Wondering suggests it’s the latter and lyrics like “please, please, please, get on your fucking knees” might back up this theory. The sheer intensity of the track itself is enough to turn heads, but for a flock of people to derive meaning from a song, so early in the band’s career - well, it’s very promising. And for those who don’t give a tuppence about the lyrical themes, there’s enough anger and frustration to get lost in from the gruesome guitar crescendos. Its affiliated genre is ‘Junk Jazz’, according to the band’s own soundcloud tag. Regardless of new genre names, it’s a passionate, awakening first effort; one of the best things First On’s heard in quite some time.
