Neu Mix #15: Salt Cathedral
Brooklynites who specialise in breaking boundaries bring you a mix devoted to furniture packing and other things way more exciting.
Roughly translated, ‘umami’ means ‘pleasant savoury taste’.
Salt Cathedral have named their DIY Weekly exclusive mix ‘Umami vol. 1’. But it’s more than pleasant. It’s occasionally sweet, too. Not to say they’ve missed the mark, or anything. The band actually told us this mix goes well with cooking, or arranging Ikea furniture. But this mix is more inclined towards the Brooklyn group’s skittish, imaginative take on music. Furniture, too. If needs be.
Their very own ‘Brooklyn Treasure’ (an exclusive track) closes the mix, lending an ever-fidgeting, childlike sense of wonder to the mix. It’s a feeling that’s ever-present in ‘Umami’ / ‘pleasant savoury taste vol 1’. Little Dragon and Miles Davis don’t usually crop up on the same tracklist, but together they help segue something clever and brilliantly oddball. Salt Cathedral fit said description to a T, so it’s no wonder they’ve gone gung-ho in the high spirited, boundless energy stakes for ‘Umami vol 1’.
