Mozart’s Sister

Neu Mozart’s Sister

Caila Thompson-Hannat’s multi-referential pop is ready to win the cynics over.

Name

: Mozart’s Sister
Based: Montreal, Canada
Listen: ‘Mozart’s Sister’
Similar to: Cyndi Lauper, The Cocteau Twins

It’d be unfair to accuse Caila Thompson-Hannat of being something of an opportunist. She’s existed as a solo artist since 2011, and two years later she’s sprung out with a sound that looks set to be the making of her.

Said sound is unerringly familiar. Grimes comparisons flock in from all sides the moment you hit play on her latest, self-titled track. And at one stage in her new ‘Hello’ EP, she lets out an eerie, high-pitched wail. Not that Claire Boucher’s trademarked the technique or anything. But cynics looking for something to latch onto will hit jackpot the moment they hear that.

And it’s unfair because Caila’s making inroads in a completely different direction to her contemporaries. Her music isn’t so much concerned with modern day peers, more referential to classic ’80s pop, with the bold anthemic pop of Cyndi Lauper even cropping up as a comparison. And beyond its ode-paying duties, Mozart’s Sister represents all things forward-thinking. Confessional and spliced with invention, it’s pop with an altogether new outlook.

Stream Mozart’s Sister’s self-titled track below. The ‘Hello’ EP is released on 25th February through Merok Records.
