Exclusive guide Track by Track: Mozart’s Sister - Being

Dive into the weird and wonderful world of Caila Thompson-Hannant and her debut LP.

“You can’t get a good thing without a bad thing.” That’s the opening mantra of Caila Thompson-Hannant’s debut LP. As it plays out, ‘Being’ reveals a lifetime’s worth of crazed juxtapositions. On the outside, this is a bed of warm, luscious electronica, full of delicate synth tweaks and head-turning bleeps. But beyond the initial impression, this self-produced first work reveals its ugly side. There’s a jerky, constantly fidgeting style. Mozart’s Sister reveals itself to be a project with all the intent and giddy enthusiasm of a kid being shown the world for the first time. ‘Enjoy’ mixes elements that shouldn’t be seen within a mile of each other - synths that sound like pan pipes, vocals that are upfront, stripped of effects - and yet it’s the sheer excitement of this process that seizes the agenda.

With the record out this week on Asthmatic Kitty, the Canadian artist has kindly provided a guide to her debut. ‘Being’ is also streamable below on Soundcloud for the first time.
