THE GIG
Mozart’s Sister supports Dan Deacon - Village Underground, London

Being in support of one of the most maniacal live performers in the world is more than a tough gig. But the energetic shage-show of Mozart’s Sister should give Dan Deacon some decent competition. This week is Caila Thompson-Hannat’s first string of UK shows, before she releases her forthcoming EP on Merok Records.

THE SONG
PaintTheDark - LARIAT

‘LARIAT’ shouldn’t work. Goodness knows plenty of bands have opted for a big, bold synth-pop sound such as this before, only to fall flat on their sorry faces. Ever since The Big Pink gave a magical ode to the most sinister, addictive pizza company, countless acts have tried and failed to replicate such a success. But ‘LARIAT’, unlike its sorry competitors, has one heck of a chorus. It jumps right out at you, just when you’re beginning to think PaintTheDark might be another middling bunch of uninventive fools. Not to be. They’re going to be huge, this lot.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Kill Moon - Shine

Brighton’s Kill Moon don’t hesitate or consider just how many speakers they might blow in the process of bursting forth with new song ‘Shine’, they just go for the jugular with no reason or back-up plan. Good thing it works. ‘Shine’ puts Kill Moon right up with the likes of Blackeye in circuiting huuuuge, glowing odes to the ’90s, a decade we barely reckoned could be touched with a ten foot pole. Instead, nostalgia’s worked its magic and it’s helped paint a dubious decade in pretty colours. Exhibit A can be streamed above.
