Neu Night Beds

Winston Yellen provides the clear voice of America in his songs, like an incoming Andrew Bird soundalike.

Name

: Winston Yellen
Based: Nashville
Listen: ‘Even If We Try
Similar to: S. Carey, Andrew Bird

Winston Yellen, who sings under the Night Beds moniker, is described by his label as someone possessing a “new, great American voice.” Put emphasis on the word American here, for Yellen has some kind of magic touch, the kind that erupts out of every turning page in Of Mice And Men, the sort you only encounter in reality when trudging along the big open road and seeing all there is to see in the country of pride and greatness. It’s unique and it belongs to a select few experiences.

Winston is 23 years old but every word emerging from his mouth is of grand stature; like it belongs to some old wise man with stories to tell. Above anyone, there’s a similarity to Andrew Bird in the glorious coming together of string and rousing vocal. Yellen won’t spout science facts at you within his lyrics, though. He keeps it simple. Recent song ‘Even If We Try’ is as accessible as it gets, without sacrificing artistic integrity. He maintains a careful balance between paying homage to Bon Iver-esque purrings of emotion, without overdoing the whole bravado. America, and everywhere else, ought to bow down in his presence.

The ‘Even If We Try’/’You Were Afraid’ 7” is out now through Dead Oceans.
