News Outfit

A smear of synth and drums.

There’s always room for drama in pop music, even if there’s not always a band that necessarily deserves to be filling that gap. The last year saw the rise to prominence of Hurts, who’ve managed to get so big that they’ve been sung on the Greek version of Pop Idol. Given their relatively limp, timid take on what is essentially a rehash of the less fondly remembered aspects of 80’s mainstream electro, it doesn’t take a huge leap of the imagination see how potentially massive Outfit could be.

It starts with ‘Every Night I Dress Up As You’, a statement of intent if there has ever been one. Duel, interlocking vocals form the core of it all, the basis of the slow build to crescendo that makes it one of the most darkly arresting tracks of the year. Perhaps most the most startling thing is the confidence that lines it all, resisting the urge to use reverb or to camp it up, settling for an aesthetic that borders on being stark, a smear of synth and drums largely being the only things to back them up.

All the pieces are already in place, with an website already showcasing an exquisitely shot video to pique your interest, the blogs going mad about them and just enough given away in the more tender musings of their other tracks, ‘Killer’, to hint at where they might be headed in the future. Greece’s reality TV hopefuls are not going to know what’s hit them once an album comes out.
