Neu The Neu Bulletin (11th May 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Babeheaven, The Yetis and Willie J Healey.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Babeheaven, Maxixe
London, Brixton Windmill
Tonight the Brixton Windmill hosts one of the first performances from oddball, arty outfit Babeheaven. Palma Violets’ Chilli Jesson makes a quick cameo in their video for ‘Friday Sky’, which also features a guy breaking blocks of concrete with his hands while cool-types watch on, eating slices of pizza. Their live show might prove less surreal, but hopefully it’ll be just as disarming. They play with Maxixe.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Willie J Healey - Subterraneans
It’s a sprint to the finish for Willie J Healey. A bright new UK voice with a knack for storytelling defining his early steps, a new video for ‘Subterraneans’ helps him stand out as a genuinely exciting prospect. There’s a hint of King Krule in his baritone-driven delivery, but there’s a more direct approach with a song like this. It’s a gorgeous, deep-thinking night owl. His debut EP is out today - grab it here. Catch him at Oxford’s The Library on 13th May.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
The Yetis - Where You Goin’
The Yetis are the trustiest source for instant, nagging pop numbers. The Allentown, Pennsylvania group have swiftly become a bold, bouncing force. Like fellow US favourites Twin Peaks, there’s a sharp-witted appeal to their melody-crammed songwriting, one foot under the sand, the other only aiming towards the sky.
