News The Neu Bulletin (13th February 2014)

Your daily new music guide, featuring LAW, Acrobat and HOUDINNE.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

THE GIG
Young Fathers, Law - London, Electrowerkz

Young Fathers and Law represent the Edinburgh contingent tonight. They’re two acts who’ve combined plenty of times before (Young Fathers produced recent Lauren Holt material), but live they both amount to separate forces, albeit ones that tag onto their own strand of terrifying, abrasive pop.

THE BIG NEU THING
Acrobat - Invincible

There’s something a little bit “wheeyy - PARKLIFE” about Acrobat’s debut track, but there’s also a funk-ridden backdrop, a playful melodrama to what they do. Outfit, Blood Orange Franz Ferdinand walk into a bar, basically. ‘Invincible’ certainly isn’t short of confidence, smashing the scene like a wrecking ball of rough-edged but supremely assured pop.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
HOUDINNE - Damn!

Taken from a mixtape of the same name, it’s difficult to know where the line’s drawn between HOUDINNE’s good intentions and parody knowhow. They’re either taking the complete piss - all of them look like the good kids in school, and they sample the Microsoft Error noise within their meta hip-hop - or they’re onto something. This track is a short-lived but clever bugger, 2k13 defined, with one eye on 2k14.
