News The Neu Bulletin (16th January 2013)

Your mandatory dose of new music recommendations, chosen by Neu.

Every day of the week, Neu gives you a choice show and a selection of new music tips, all in the name of exposing you to something new and exciting.

If there’s a gig that’s worth heading to, we’ll tell you all about it, and if there’s a song you need in your life, we’ll make sure you don’t turn a blind eye. It’s the Neu Bulletin.

THE GIG
Beaty Heart - The Old Blue Last, London

We once labelled them the ‘natural sonic evolution from Animal Collective’, but Beaty Heart seem to have a fair few more ideas swimming around. Their live show goes beyond trippy, psychological convention and instead provides for something harsh and interactive.

THE SONG
Phoria - Red

Yesterday we alerted eagle-eyed readers to a new compilation released by Brighton experts One Inch Badge. Local artists - including Neu favourites Kins - put their names to some new tracks for the occasion. Shortly after our Kins enthusiasm dissipated to the point that we could feasibly consider listening to something else, we moved onto Phoria. ‘Red’ is distinct to the others on Soundcloud; an initially deft R&B application soon gives way to sinking piano chords and tender vocals that don’t grate, despite the obvious sentimental value of the whole thing. It’s truly beautiful, and of its time.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
LOUIDJIE - Mist

Credit goes to Dots and Dashes for this introduction, and for the rightful eager finger-pointing to LOUIDJIE’s clearest contemporary: Nicolas Jaar. In the spellbinding, cinematic drama of a track like ‘Mist’, the Belgian producer might lack the minimal, ‘hey-let’s-put-my-music-in-a-cube’ approach and sophisticated know-how, but the atmosphere of this and Jaar’s work are much the same. And no, don’t ask us how to pronounce the name.
