Sheffield nostalgists Blessa headlined a gig in East London, in what’s likely to be a packed out preview of the year ahead. Blessa have big stages in wearing, it’s just a case of when.

THE BIG NEU THING
Allez Bartoli - Ilyushin


Derry, Ireland duo Allez Bartoli have been around for ages - since 2010 - but it’s only of late that they’ve wound up penning slick, minimal pop songs like ‘Ilyushin’. Based on bare, hardly there elements, it’s a track that sinks out of view, swerves to distract. Despite this, it’s all held together by one constant, deeply tuned guitar line. It creeps up on conscience like a grubby habit, destined to take over.

EP two by The Drink

London trio The Drink - consisting of Dearbhla Minogue, Daniel Fordham and David Stewart - recall esteemed, smartly applied pop from previous decades, eventually landing on something that slots nicely between the arrangements of Empty Pools and the intelligent interchange of Field Music. Sweet, hook-heavy rejoice is enhanced with note-bending riffs and soaring atmospherics. It all ends up on new EP ‘two’, which is out now on Bandcamp.
