New music guide The Neu Bulletin (16th March 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring Our Girl, JUNK and Magic Potion.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Our Girl, BAYY, Abattoir Blues, Sulky Boy

Brighton, Bleach (echochamp launch)

Something’s stirring by the sea, and it’s not just the familiar odour of seagull crap and piss-stained seaweed. Brighton’s THE go-to place for exciting new bands right now. The latest in a long line of new happenings is the foundation of super-label Echochamp, which puts on its first showcase at Bleach tonight. Topping the bill is BAYY, with Our Girl, Abattoir Blues and Sulky Boy completing the strong four-band bill. One of the best free shows you’ll find all year.

THE BIG NEU THING:
JUNK - Over

On their latest ‘Eyes Shut’ EP, Lake District / London outfit JUNK open themselves up to possibility. Standout track ‘Over’ leaps from pensive acoustics to soul-fledged electronics, like Warpaint if they swapped the Joshua Tree for a Peckham club. Once it gets going, ‘Over’ is right up there with the most fully-formed first steps.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Magic Potion - Deep Web

Choking on the ol’ Viceroy, Magic Potion is a new Swedish project devoted to sweet fuzz. Debut track ‘Deep Web’ lifts lightly from Mac DeMarco, but there’s a straight-up take on songwriting that you won’t find in the Canadian’s beer-stained Brooklyn hang. Finding simplicity out of strange situations, this is a gorgeous introduction, a no-frills hello.
