THE GIG
Splashh support Unknown Mortal Orchestra - London, Village Underground
Their debut album’s been delayed, but that doesn’t stop Splashh from playing shows non-stop, thriving in their environment of choice. Supporting UMO at the Village Underground, considering it’s practically just a year since Splashh started playing shows, this is a big deal.
THE SONG
SAMARIS - goda tungl
New One Little Indian signing SAMARIS speak in their native tongue, Icelandic. You needn’t read the direct translations of these lyrics to understand the mood of ‘goda tungl’, although the band have kindly posted their own interpretation here. At first the song trickles by with cold electronica backed by brittle vocals. That’s until a sweet, gently-soaring horn sections enters midway, clashing a These New Puritans-style emotional burst with the icy backdrop. It all breaks into beautiful shards of glass.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Dolfinz - Resonate Darkly
It’s always a bit of a risky time when a band recruits a new member, especially when the addition of an instrument is such a significant increase to what we’ve heard from the group in the past. Stonehaven former two-piece Dolfinz jump a whole 33% in size on new song ‘Resonate Darkly’ through the addition of a bassist - but they seem to know what they’re doing. Though we certainly didn’t think their noisy, punky songs lacked anything in the past, ‘Resonate Darkly’ hears a deeper and fuller sound from the band that works in their favour. Three’ll do though, lads. [Jake May]
