THE GIG
Sunless ‘97 - Manchester, Trof Fallowfield
Ed Leeson, Alice Davies and Matt McGough head up to Manchester, the London trio on the brink of releasing their new ‘Aurora I / Aurora II’ single through Not Even. The A-side is a huge, well documented step-up, so gig-goers will be keen to see if their cornucopia pop can translate across a full set.
THE SONG
BODYWORK - TAME
Tame? This is anything but. A glorious, muscular sonic assault, this lead track on Leeds trio BODYWORK’s debut LP is bright and relentlessly dazzling. Just when you become accustomed to its sparkling, John Tabalot-style pulse, it breaks into a structure-defining, power-pop coda, the likes of which we’ve never witnessed before. The most ambitious, fully-realised piece of ‘internet-pop’ - whatever the hell that is - we’ve heard in goodness knows how long. ‘THE GRIND’ LP is due out Summer 2013.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Lizard Kisses
Simplicity strikes again, that dagger-like effectiveness ruling over everything else we so adore. Cory Siegler and Marc Merza - a Brooklyn duo whose new EP is being released via. 160 hand sewn, silkscreened CDs - keep things rooted to the bare basics. Up above, in ‘Stones’, is where you’ll find their vaguely romantic odes becoming most obtuse and complex. But on their ‘Loving Creatures’ EP they mostly shine a direct and vivid light, with simple pop songs doing the trick and then some.
