THE GIG
Childhood - Sebright Arms, London
Childhood have enjoyed some sudden Stateside attention for their ‘Blue Velvet’ single release; a 7” on House Anxiety. Things seem to be falling into place for the Nottingham band and these Neu favourites are all set up for a thrilling 2013. This could be one of the last times you see them in such a snug setting, so make the most of the intimate occasion at London’s Sebright Arms.
THE SONG
Blasé - Mouths
If we’re trying to define the dreampop, garage punk revival movement in one fleeting, damning word, it’s probably be “Blasé”. While some musicians excel at writing escapist pop music, others put nonchalance at the forefront, under the impression that slacker equals super. Fortunately for all the all-encompassing term, this Boston musician falls into the former camp. ‘Mouths’ is a squeaky, poorly recorded gem. But it’s swimming in a whole pool of delightful melody. So it’s a keeper.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Although it’s not the most heartwarming of visual feasts to immerse yourself in on a Monday morning, Night Beds’ remarkable ‘Even If We Try’ track has a similarly touching, harrowing video. Violence, intoxication, the consumption of noodles: It’s like everything you’d find in a ‘don’t get drunk, kids’ handout. And it’s strangely beautiful.
