THE GIG
Moko - London, Corsica Studios

Trip-hop revivalist Moko has already played on main stages at Reading & Leeds (performing alongside Chase and Status), but there’s little chance of it going to her head. South London’s Corsica Studios is perfectly built for the Goldsmiths student’s abrasive genre-bending pop.

THE SONG
Theares - Ancient Cosmology
The Late EP by Theares

Alright, alright. Theares need to rein in the drum-track a little - there’s only so much crashing cymbals an old codger can take - but by hell there’s a dark psychwave escape rooting itself at the centre of ‘Ancient Cosmology’, and it’s exciting. Consider The Wytches’ recent dive into harsh waters with pitch-black noise and amplify it tenfold. Like Iggy Pop wandering into a forest full of night terrors and escaping through the other side, it’s a sonic assault like few others witnessed this year.

Still, there’s enough swimming around in this debut to suggest big things; namely, the kind of sinister noirwave glow Suuns mastered on their last LP and Liars hinted at with ‘WIXIW’. It’s a dark undercurrent coming to the fore, a strange twitching sensation beckoning lost souls into the dark.
