New music guide The Neu Bulletin (24th April 2015)

DIY’s weekend new music tips, featuring Our Girl, Bruising and Loppa Albon.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Our Girl, Broken Hands (w/ Demob Happy)

Brighton, The Haunt

Demob Happy know how to pick a support band or two. Yesterday we picked out their London headline show as a featured gig, with the hotly-tipped Puppy on supporting duties. Tonight they arrive in Brighton with another stellar cast. Our Girl (featuring Soph Nathan from The Big Moon) are one of the best new bands the coast has to offer, and Broken Hands bring a different side to distortion. The former are in London tomorrow for a free show at The Old Blue Last, with Maui and Prom.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Loppa Albon - Franks Fangs Sank To Deep

Picked out by the internet-glued voice of reason Don’t Need No Melody, Loppa Albon is the moniker of Alexander Lappin. His songs leapfrog from gentle verses to enraged chants - if Avey Tare could make horcruxes, this guy would be carrying one of them. The way he bursts into a chant of “let’s hope that Christmas doesn’t bring much rain, rain, rain!” makes season changes feel all the more enlivened. It’s not just the aesthetic that works here, either. It’s the build - there’s an insane amount of craft going into this thing.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Bruising - Think About Death

Whichever dark, dank corner Bruising step into, they make the world seem a little brighter. This Leeds group are fast becoming a vital concern, their latest ‘Think About Death’ track managing to balance emotions like a see-saw built from bare hands. Topsy turvy but more loveable with every second that passes, it features on Art Is Hard’s must-have ‘Family Portrait’ 12”, feat. Abattoir Blues, Fruit Bomb and Living Hour.
