THE GIG: Black Honey & Kagoule (supporting East India Youth)
Backing William Doyle’s last London East India Youth show for a good while are two bright sparks. Brighton’s Black Honey upped the drama value with this week’s ‘Corinne’ single, and Kagoule’s first work ‘Urth’ is an underrated beast from this year.
London, Garage
Pink, plastic, Barbied - GIRLI has created her own universe. Impressive for someone with just a handful of songs to their name, but this Londoner produces brilliantly assured, bonkers pop that belongs exclusively to her. ‘ASBOys’ boasts M.I.A.’s confidence, unhinged bolshiness and a grime-nodding UK pulse.

Saltwater Sun are thrillseekers. It’s clear on ‘Making Eyes’, which combines ‘My Number’-style guitar licks with a sun-doused pop sheen. Pitting itself in the heart of blossoming romance, it’s a fevered take fresher than diving into a pool of locally squeezed orange juice.
