New music guide The Neu Bulletin (26th November 2014)
DIY’s daily new music delivery, featuring Lapsley, Lull and Academie.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Lapsley and Dornik - London, ICA
2015 looks bright for both acts playing London’s ICA tonight. In an Annie Mac Presents bill, Dornik is Jessie Ware’s drummer, paving the way for a big solo run of his own in 2015. Joining him is Lapsley, an XL-signed star in the making, with debut EP ‘Understudy’ prepped to define next year.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Academie - Sulphur
Swarms of strings back ‘Sulphur’, the spiralling debut from Johannesburg duo Academie. Jean-Louise and Alex Parker are a married couple, and instead of loving it up and recounting their vows, they combine to form perfectly formed, delicate pop that’s devoted to all things organic. A beautiful rush defines their multi-instrumentalist approach, which welcomes in every instrument in sight - horns, cellos, amped-up guitars. Nothing’s ruled out, and that’s the appeal of this all-encompassing debut.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Lull.
Classically inspired, ‘90s-nodding rock rarely arrives in as pure a form as Lull.’s. Instead of drifting or settling into a sweet, effortless rhythm, the North London four-piece surge forward on their two existing tracks, ‘Dead or Alone’ and ‘Break Hearts’. File this Portugal via Manchester via Southern England group amongst Kid Wave in forging brilliance out of everyday tools.
