New music guide The Neu Bulletin (27th October 2014)

DIY’s daily batch of new music tips, featuring Meanwhile, susan and Hunck.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Meanwhile - London, Sebright Arms

Romance-obsessed film geek Meanwhile makes his London headline debut, following a buzzy few months of scatterbrained, excitable pop. Last month he unveiled new single ‘All For The Taking’, the clearest sign yet that his giddy synth pop’s headed for big things.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Hunck - Something Missing

The second track to emerge from London nostalgists Hunck - a band consisting of members from MT and Jonathan Boulet’s live band - could be lifted from any previous decade. Be it ‘70s glam or woozy ‘60s romance, ‘Something Missing’ is loaded to the top with classic staples. What’s missing? Nothing. This is as clean and clear a referential track to emerge in weeks, taking old sounds and giving them a sweet new shine.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Susan - Birthday Club

Let’s pray to god they never have an “album party”, but Susan represent a fine Canadian strand of the disjointed, dagger-sharp rock built up from the now no-longer Women. Offspring band Viet Cong fledge a similar routine, and on these “rough mixes” of early tracks, this deceptive new band rise up alongside the likes of Faux Fur and Each Other in giving odd, thrashing rejoice a new lease of life.
