THE GIG
Only Real - London, Shacklewell Arms
Newly signed to Virgin EMI, Niall Galvin’s Only Real is finally getting the attention it deserves, with his rough-edged London-rooted declarations being a serious contender for 2014 greatness. See what all the fuss is about.
THE BIG NEU THING
Totoake - Make It Work
Santa Cruz resident Totoake is a shadowed dream pop wielder, carefully cutting out purposefully rough-edged juggernauts, lo-fi in a state of exactitude. His ‘Make It Work’ song gives nods to the process, a determined spirit pushing through until his third track to date could easily wedge itself into a dreamy Real Estate full-length, or a sound-curveball thrown out by Deerhunter. It’s a melodic giant wrapped up in a coat of fuzz, executed with perfection.
