THE GIG
Chvrches - London, Village Underground (Sold Out)

Chvrches work best in big, beautiful spaces, so tonight’s show will go down a treat. There’ll be plenty of chances to see them play across the UK in the coming months, but in the final leg of a UK tour they’ll be in fine form tonight, we’d wage.

THE SONG
Moko - Homesick

This Moko, then. Word’s spreading. She played a show last week in London that we highlighted but this being her third track it’s still very early days. All the same, when a song spills out this much promise in one heady three minute slot, it’s hard not to get swept away by a rep that goes hand-in-hand with the Londoner. The beat on ‘Homesick’ is arguably the best part - although you can never overlook that voice - stirring in the background with a pulse that Portishead would regret not putting their name to.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
adze - Outlaw
Outlaw by adze

It’s tough to pick a favourite - or in this case, a song many might fall immediately in love with - from Boston group adze’s first work. Every track is intentionally overbearing, a giant percussion-based sucker punch that gives no polite introduction. I guess the mantra of this song - ‘we can be outlaws’ - is the easiest way to get into adze. These guys aren’t here to make friends or settle into their skin. They’re outcasts, runaways, bandits with a cause. Outlaws.
