THE GIG
East India Youth - Sheffield, Cathedral
William Doyle’s pretty much converted anyone with a passing interest to his intensely emotional, head-bopping electronica, but anyone yet to see him play the bulk of ‘Total Strife Forever’ live needs to tick that one off the list pronto.
THE BIG NEU THING
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Hold On, We’re Going Home (Drake Cover)
Once the jealousy subsides and just how young Tim Bettinson is, and just how bright his future happens to be, attention turns to the music itself. Even in this brief offcut, a Drake cover that serves as a warm-up of what’s coming next, his falsetto-led routine is perplexingly good, easeful to the extreme.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Twin Caverns - Undiscover
Sydney duo Louise Millar and Michael Macias nestle up with every sweet, melting synth line they’re capable of coming across. What’s subdued and sleepy is also executed with keen precision by Twin Caverns, like running a hot bath with exactly the right temperature (disclaimer: this song’s probably 15 times more exciting than that analogy). ‘Undiscover’ is a gorgeous number that’s clearly here to please.
