New music guide The Neu Bulletin (2nd February 2015)

DIY’s daily new music tips, featuring Cosmo Sheldrake, Oh Wonder and Kalash.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Cosmo Sheldrake supports Songhoy Blues

London, Oslo

He’s just put out a quick-witted new track - tonight sees Cosmo Sheldrake kicking off a potentially breakthrough 2015 by supporting fellow Transgressive gems Songhoy Blues at London Oslo. The Mali-formed gems top a bill that comes backed by Cosmo’s shape-shifting, fairytale-ready folk.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Oh Wonder - Lose It

Initially it looked foolhardy for Oh Wonder to promise one new song per month, starting out as online nobodies from the end of summer 2014. Since then, however, their stock’s only risen, each track outdoing the previous. ‘Lose It’ is no exception. Slick to the extreme, and backed with booming piano lines and organic instrumentation, this is blog-pop done right. When a bulk of news prospect sound like they fell out the same copy-paste basket, Oh Wonder offer something new. Their debut full-length (out this September) looks like being worthy of the build-up.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Kalash - Firewall

Bedroom kid Kalash is a “modern hippie” based in the UK. So far, he’s posted two tracks, one being a super rough-edged “demo” of debut ‘Firewall’, the other being a more refined by ultimately lo-fi edit (above). “Btw I don’t have a manager,” reads the guy’s Soundcloud bio, and there’s plenty to iron out when it comes to future material, but there’s no doubt Kalash offers something different, his early work coming off emotion-led and perfectly unhinged.
