New music guide The Neu Bulletin (2nd June 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring Oscar, Dorcha and Madeira.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Oscar

London, Social

‘Daffodil Days’ are here, and the nights are getting shorter. Oscar’s sunshine-glazed pop has a deep, emotional side, but when showcased live it’s more of a celebration. Tonight he plays a free gig at London Social, with AOSOON and Field Studios in support.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Dorcha - Black Streams

Yesterday we announced a ‘DIY Presents’ festival in Birmingham, All Years Leaving. Joining East India Youth and Speedy Ortiz on the bill is Dorcha, a local project with every means of skyrocketing out of the city. Debut LP ‘Black Streams’ is a brilliantly complex introduction, mixing gentle string parts with simmering synths. Structures shift with the clap of a hand and the deftest of touches, Anna Palmer leading an expansive group through tricky but rewarding terrain.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Boycrush - Flirt (ft. Madeira)

Kim Pflaum is best known for leading Yumi Zouma on vocal, but she’s since left the group to focus on her solo work as Madeira. On Boycrush’s ‘Flirt’, she paves the way for a new chapter of sun-glazed, big-thinking pop, the kind that made Yumi Zouma’s early recordings so effortlessly nostalgic.
