New music guide The Neu Bulletin (30th July 2015)

DIY’s daily dose of new music, picking out Empress Of’s London residency plus new songs from Arbes and May Black.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Empress Of

London, Power Lunches

London has been taken over by Lorely Rodriguez this week. Tonight, she plays the last of three residency shows at Power Lunches. Special guests, incense, great DJs and a showcase of debut album ‘Me’ - everything we’ve heard about these shows so far as been glowing. Tonight she’s joined by Nic Tasker, Spector’s Fred MacPherson and Terrible Records DJs.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Arbes - Key Largo

Like kicking down sandcastles, Melbourne trio Arbes bring a disjointed charm to summer. They wreck the scenery and fuck up the fun, all while sporting great big, beaming smiles. Their debut cassette, ‘Swimmer’, is being shipped out tomorrow, and it’s a bright showcase of direct but deceptive indie-pop. Thanks to Theodore Hughes for the tip.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
May Black - Ain’t No Sun

Schooled in the sludgy, no-prisoners sleaze of Deap Vally, Oakland’s May Black doesn’t mince words or hold back on ‘Ain’t No Sun’. Part Velvet Underground ferocity, part Deep South road trip with an unhappy ending, there’s dastardly intent to her every move.
