THE GIG
Law, Phoria, Pale - Peckham, Bussey Building

Down at the gorgeous location of Peckham’s Bussey Building, Crack in the Road blog puts on its second showcase in as many months. Future ‘How June Is Now’ guest Law headlines, with Brighton’s Phoria (pictured, above) and London duo Pale completing a stunning bill, which in turn is also complimented by a host of artists putting on showcases between and during bands.

THE SONG
Lolawolf - Wanna Have Fun
Wanna Have Fun by Lolawolf

The title of Brooklyn-based Lolawolf’s debut track is pretty misleading. ‘Wanna Have Fun’ should read more like ‘Wanna Make You Get Out Of My Life’. It’s the tale of ‘you and me and she’ being ‘history’, as gently lifting synth sections rise above the tension and soothe the scene. It’s a smartly produced early work, undoubtedly by someone who knows their way around a production desk. No info to go on beyond the fact that Lolawolf write love songs with a piercing message, but it’s enough to run with.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Francis and the Lights - ETC

Ignore the static leather-shoe-featuring video above for a second and just focus on how brilliantly soulful this song is. If you thought Inc. could ruffle your feathers, or if you believed Brolin was a king of nu-soul, this studio veteran Francis and the Lights is an entirely different prospect. This guy’s penned songs for Drake, so there’s no lack of experience to speak of, but instead of moaning about riches and pretty girls, ‘ETC’ is a joyous, uplifting number; anything but an extension of something superior.
