New music guide The Neu Bulletin (5th August 2015)

DIY’s daily guide to new music - featuring COMPNY, Miamigo, Lupa J and Miya Folick.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Miamigo, Compny

London, Notting Hill Arts Club

Two bands with slick, chart-bound purpose join forces tonight for West London’s New Shapes night. Expect industry huddles and enough future-hits to be able to plan ahead with the top 40. Miamigo specialise in dark hush-hush smoothness, while COMPNY clearly spend most of their time jet-setting to beaches and living the escapist high-life.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Lupa J - Armour

Applying her violin-trained upbringing to direct, heady pop, Sydney newcomer Lupa J takes a step up with ‘Armour’. A couple of years back, aged just fifteen, she picked up comparisons to Lorde - simply on merit of being young and having an eye for reinventing the pop wheel. ‘Armour’ sees her settling into her skin, giving strings a lease of life in gloomy, neon-lit territory.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Miya Folick - Oceans

With her first steps, Miya Folick’s imagery peers into the future. Press shots look like they could have been shot by Hannah Diamond. But instead of grabbing the PC Music bandwagon by the tail, she’s creating something completely different to shiny, gimmick-heavy pop. ‘Oceans’ is the strongest sign yet of her singer-songwriter potential. It dives under the surface before breaking out with bold chants, twisting and turning without warning. Drama lines every seam, and it’s delivered with a gutsy edge. Anything but box-ticking blog pop.
