Miamigo make dazzling introduction with ‘What I Want’

Miamigo are specialists in quick-thinking, funk-fledged pop. That much is clear even from their first steps, the latest case in point being new single ‘What I Want’.

An all-out #banger in every intention, the single comes back with a video that cruises round home city Brighton’s streets (and beach pebbles - always a health hazard). It follows on from June’s ‘Hard to Love’ EP, but this song goes further than any on their previous release in the instant fix stakes.

DIY is premiering ‘What I Want’ below - check out our introductory Q&A with the group, while you’re at it. The single comes out 13th November on Indian Hop Recordings.

Miamigo play DIY’s showcase at London festival Community, taking place 4th November at Hoxton Square Bar & Grill.

How long have you been living/recording in Brighton? What makes it such a good place to make music in?

We’ve lived in Brighton for five years now but the two us grew up in North London together. We do love London but it’s nice being a little further out by the sea, it’s far more relaxing and easier, it’s also where we rehearse and write all of our music. When you live in your studio it’s nice to get out for a breather, it’s a perfect size town, nice and compact, full of wonderful little places.

If you’re doing a Ferris Bueller-style day out in Brighton, where do you go and why?

Maybe having a little chill on the Hove lawns, the beach or St. Ann’s Well park. The sky seems pretty big here without the tall buildings so it’s nice to gaze. If the weather’s nice, then the sea is fun. There are galleries and a big wheel too, but it’s more likely we’d be hanging out with our extended amigos watching Ferris Bueller indoors.

After debut track Opinions’ came out, you took yourself away from the spotlight and recorded loads. What’s the biggest thing you learnt from the experience?

It was nice to have the time to write and record every single day, to gain a clear concept of our sound and experiment. The biggest thing we learnt was to just enjoy it - there’s no right and there’s no wrong, it’s music. If it feels good to create, that should hopefully resonate when listening. Music is totally mood dependant, it can complement or change your state of mind. So I think it was important for us to learn how to build a variety of moods in our songs in keeping with our sound.
