New music guide The Neu Bulletin (5th March 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring Kero Kero Bonito, Walter TV and The Japanese House.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Kero Kero Bonito, Great Good Fine Ok

London, Red Gallery (TILT)

Tonight sees the first in a series of nights called “TILT”, which aims to bring together the best in pop’s more unorthodox strands. It’s hard to think of a finer flag-bearer than Kero Kero Bonito, the capital’s most exciting trio in yonks, fusing unfathomable genres for fun. They’re joined tonight by Brooklyn’s Great Good Fine Ok - again, specialists in all things giddy. Tickets are still available, via DICE.

THE BIG NEU THING:
The Japanese House - Still

Talk about an accolade: The Japanese House’s ‘Still’ has ended up being the last ever Hottest Record for Radio 1’s departing new music enthusiast Zane Lowe. A solemn note to end on, this is a curious debut from the 19-year-old Londoner. Every elements feels intentionally (and only slightly) out of place. Think NYC trio Wet with even more off-kilter intentions.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Walter TV - Surf Metal

Joe McMurray and Pierce McGarry spend most waking hours touring with Mac DeMarco - Walter TV would, by definition, be a fun job on the side. As it plays out, this is a project defined by spur of the moment sharp bursts of thrash. ‘Surf Metal’ (taken from second album ‘Blessed’) is a garish freakshow of a track, taking the haunted house ride in an abandoned fairground and going skywards.
