New music guide The Neu Bulletin (5th September 2014)
DIY’s new music guide features Febueder, George Boorman and California Carpool.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THIS WEEKEND’S GIG:Febueder — London, Notting Hill Arts Club
This month’s Communion club night at Notting Hill Arts Club brings together a gigantic bill of new names, topped off by new Melodic Records signings Febueder. Their darting, expressive new track borders on the brink of math rock without being too arty for its own good. It premiered on DIY earlier this week. Also on the bill: Freddie Dickson, Racing Glaciers, Blackfoot Circle, Lauren Shera, Seafret.
THE BIG NEU THING:George Boorman — Palms
Here’s a sleepy highlight from Beech Coma Volume 2, a new compilation bringing together some of the best new, bedroom-based UK bands. Produced by Kristian Smith of The Magic Gang, ‘Palms’ is the kind of song that could, feasibly, wind on endlessly. A smoky hush of dimly expressed vocals, everything lightly reverberates in unison. Truly gorgeous.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:California Carpool — Seaside Suicide
Earlier this week we picked out the almighty ‘beach dreams’ collection of demos from Brighton resident Isaac Ide aka California Carpool. His latest track, ‘Seaside Suicide’, continues the traditional DIIV-under-ether routine, with spiky guitar notes swarming in from all sides. Grim details are spelled out in full, but they’re shrouded in a thick cloud of energised noise.
