New music guide The Neu Bulletin (9th October 2014)

Only Real, Speelburg and Hawkon feature in DIY’s daily new music tips.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Only Real - London, The Macbeth

Niall Galvin continues with his “reppin’ real” cause tonight in Dalston, ahead of the release of his 2015 debut album. Sessions are being wrapped up for that first work. Expect it to boast the same rowdy, tongue-in-cheek flavour as his early singles.

THE BIG NEU THING:
HAWKON - Dare To Follow Me

Who knew romance could be expressed in such sweet, synthetic form? The PC Music crew attempted to put love in the form of an MP3 “Attachment” via Hannah Diamond, but HAWKON’s gambit feels more sincere. He expresses comfort on top of sleepy, sparse synth lines, the kind that could scatter and fall out of structure when in the wrong hands. This Bergen via London newcomer is an old-school songwriter using new tools. You can tell - ‘Dare to Follow Me’ is the kind of track that’d woo just about anyone over in any given era. What a sweetheart.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Speelburg - Aubrey

Brighton producer Speelberg constructs his own cinematic fantasies. With ‘Aubrey’ (presumably starring Plaza of the same name), his first scene / debut track is one of flickered, semi-focused opening credits. Like his sort-of namesake’s space-age triumphs, this song is firmly based in the future. Vocals are contorted, coo’ing in a robotic cool. “You’ve been on my mind, so long,” you can just about hear him saying. Expect Speelburg to stay etched into the conscience.
