Neu This Week In New Music (28th September 2013)
Neu rounds up the week’s thrashing highlights, featuring RADKEY and Royal Blood.
Two of Neu’s standout moments from the past week came via bands cut from the same cloth. Loudness was a fundamental. Being good at being loud helped, too. Producing three minute tracks that extract people’s inners and throw them into hyperspace? That’s a bonus. The third act stands out a little bit. It’s only his second track to date, but it’s one of those songs that affirms all the ridiculous chatter that seems to surrounds artists at this stage in a career. Hot air’s bound to be in even thicker supply for all the below, not that they don’t deserve it. What an arduous process, having to top already brilliant achievements, song by song. Still, these three seem to be bloody adept at pulling it off:
Listen below to Neu’s highlights from the past seven days in new music:
TRACK OF THE WEEK
Ben Khan - Eden
Chances are Ben Khan might be the guy to do what Jai Paul always threatened to do: Break into the charts and give the top 40 a little tickle. Comparisons to the enigmatic XL signing won’t let up for young Khan - chances are they never will. But he’s probably unconcerned about all that. The toxic dose of future-soul that pours out of ‘Eden’ is like a glorious gift from the garden itself.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
RADKEY - Romance Dawn
Chances are this one was conceived on a pretty low budget. But instead of chucking an iPhone around a studio and hitting play, RADKEY did the more sensible thing and spruced up some band footage with crazy cartoon effects that resemble Scott Pilgrim’s footage amped up on sugary treats. The fros and dreads belonging to the Missouri trio are becoming nigh-on iconic. Just wait ‘til they play Jools Holland (very soon) and land themselves some much-deserved attention.
DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Royal Blood
Similar to RADKEY in the sense that there’s only sweat, booze and the odd bruise in their conscience, Royal Blood are a newer being with similarly grizzly goals on the agenda. Queens of the Stone Age have a fresh-faced companion if ‘Out of the Black’ is anything to go by. Sounding like they’ve risen straight from the pits of hell with half a dozen night-terrors to recount, the Brighton duo have backed up some early 2013 demos with one of the year’s most all-out frenzied giants.
