News This Week In New Music (3rd November 2012)

Neu editor Jamie Milton details the past seven day’s new music happenings.

While established bands and Mercury nominees stroke their bellies and recover from the 40-course meal from the ceremony, other acts wait in the wings, waiting for their opportunity to pick up gongs and do other important, surreal things that they’ll never forget. At least one of the below will have a career set in motion, where new wonderful things happen every day. It’s probably happening already. Stream the finest cuts of the past seven day’s of new music to discover why exactly these bands are going places.

TRACK OF THE WEEK
Only Real - Backseat Kissers

It arrived late in the week, just before we began scratching our chins to remind ourselves of the week’s happenings, but Only Real has gone from likeable slacker to formidable player with this debut single proper. Romantic imagery, combined with sun-kissed guitar lines and some smarter than thou sampling - it all makes for one hell of a track.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Crushed Beaks - Breakdown

Crushed Beaks are a pair of cinema-hogs. They’d happily throw you out of your seat headfirst into a nasty looking alleyway if the theatre had sold out, just to see a remastered version of their favourite horror flick. They’re probably paying homage to a famed director with the clip for ‘Breakdown’, but whoever they are, they’re unbeknownst to us, so we’re happy to gaze on in wonder as Matt from the band gets slapped in the face by budgie collectors and nude couples. You heard that right. Stream up above.

DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Pale

Pale is about as informative and in many ways, detracting a name as Elbow or Editors or BEIGE. Perhaps it’s some kind of secret plot to reward those persistent enough to see through a dull looking name only to discover a pot of musical gold. Debut track & Neu Bulletin Song of the day ‘Too Much’ (we’ve been told the project has had previous new tracks which sounded completely different, but this one’s the real deal) is a finely-crafted pop classic in the making from Pale, with all the staples of expertly delivered, understated songwriting. Anonymity remains, and while we wait for more details, this’ll no doubt help tide us over.
