You’ll get the vibe even before you listen to the music. With song names like ‘Flamingo’, ‘Fizzy Drinks’ and ‘Sweet Discontent’ summer vibes are guaranteed with Tuff Love, alongside something adolescent and angsty. A look at the band themselves, in bright colourful clothing, should be enough to confirm it. This is your next great US college rock inspired band.
Their music is essentially sunny guitar pop in the style of Weezer or The Breeders. The band cite Pixies as an influence, though they lean more towards the Kim Deal side of their output. There’s some grunge in there too, though it’s not quite the typical Seattle Sub Pop sound. It’s more like the bands that grew out of the Nirvana circle. Think the lighter moments of Hole or early Foo Fighters.
Currently the only track they have online that isn’t a half minute sampler from their EP ‘Junk’, released this May, is ‘Sweet Discontent’. It’s a catchy three chord pop number that goes from clean jangling guitars to thick fuzz over a driving bass. Julie Eisenstein’s vocal delivery is unmistakably British, which is just as well then, because when the EP drops it’s going to be the perfect accompaniment to afternoon barbecues and cider in the park.
