Back Page For One Night Only!: Bimini curates their dream gig

The Drag Race star and all round icon gives us an insight into their ideal night out.

Each month, we ask a different Very Special Guest Star to curate their dream gig for the back page of our latest print magazine - and for our October 2024 issue, we welcomed drag queen, singer, podcaster, and all-round icon Bimini to DIY’s hallowed back page.

Headliner: The 27 Club

This is going to be a celebration of The 27 Club - I want some of those amazing artists who only reached 27 but left such an impact and a blueprint. For one night only, back from the dead, we’ve got Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain - a whole day and a full-on festival celebrating them. Amy can headline because we love Amy. I went to the premiere of the film recently and did a big blonde beehive as a homage to her.

Supports: Madonna

I don’t know how she’d feel about supporting but I’d like her to be part of it! She can support as a current living legend. I would love ‘90s to early ‘00s Madonna; ‘Ray of Light’ into ‘Music’, that kind of era. A bit hippy but a bit cowgirl too, and Ali G is with her as well. I don’t think we need much more, I think that’ll sell the tickets.

Venue: The Colosseum, Rome

I want it to be somewhere pretty iconic so we’ll be at The Colosseum in Rome where Lizzy McGuire filmed ‘What Dreams Are Made Of’. Obviously that wasn’t real because it would be an absolute health and safety hazard, but for it The Colosseum has been turned into a stadium so you can perform there. Lizzy McGuire is the main reference point, not the gladiators, it’s Lizzy.

Who are you going with?

I’m taking my mum because I was 16 years old when Amy passed and me and my mum were a bit tumultuous at that point, but we loved Amy. So this will be a moment for us to go and see her together. My mum’s like, 4ft 11 and she doesn’t go anywhere without a pair of heels on, so she’s dressed up, she’s got her Louboutins on, she can barely walk in them. We’re ready to go.

What are you wearing?

I’m about to launch my own latex line called Bonyx, so I’m head-to-toe in my own line and so is my mum. Latex is a really misrepresented material and fabric; it’s got its place in the world of fetish which we love but it’s misunderstood. I’m making pieces that are wearable and everyday.

What are you drinking?

Tequila and apple juice - that’s a nice easy one to drink - and then we go on to just neat tequila when the apple juice starts giving me indigestion which inevitably is going to happen. Recently I’ve been trying to be good with drinking, so there’s a two-to-four drink rule.

Is there an afterparty?

We’ll have some iconic queer DJs and performers, and stay in the vibe of living and dead legends. So there’s Frankie Knuckles, Sylvester, but also Honey Dijon who’s still with us; it’s just gonna be a big gay afterparty but also very rock’n’roll because The 27 Club are also there. It would be quite the party! I reckon we’d be backstage at The Colosseum and we’d completely ruin it. Gladiator attire is necessary at this point and we’ll all get taken back to the hotel in chariots.

Any additional extras?

I want misrepresented and misunderstood infamous stars to attend: Pamela Anderson obviously, Anna Nicole Smith, Azealia Banks is a bit problematique but she’s coming along. It’s just gonna be full of the girls. Monica Lewinsky’s there, Hilary Clinton, Kamala… I’d also use this opportunity to interview them for my new podcast, The Pieces, which is all about the puzzle to create your identity. A lot of these people had iconic personas and did amazing things so to speak to them would be a real opportunity to get to know them.
