Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick. Recently we’ve met grunge-pop provocateur SPIDER, Malaysian-Irish producer, singer-songwriter yunè pinku, and 19-year-old indie prodigy Eaves Wilder, but now we’re learning a little more about Minnesota multi-hyphenate METTE. Fresh from releasing her new video for her most recent single ‘Mama’s Eyes’, we had a quick catch up with the singer-dancer-actress to get to know her a little better. “The ‘Mama’s Eyes’ music video is a celebration of my beloved artist journey… It’s a window into my coming of age story - how I’ve found music, dance, and performance to be an outlet of self expression and a divine sense of belonging,” METTE has said, of her latest creative endeavour. Hi, my name is Mette (pronounced MEH-Teh). There are many sides to a Gemini… If you can handle this body heat/stanky beat… you might be my genre bending, danceathon match!

Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?

I’m super inspired by Nelly Furtado, Robyn, Chaka Khan, and Grace Jones. I’m also inspired by dancers; first seeing Sophia Boutella dance was a magical moment for me.

Which track of yours should a first-time listener start with, and why?

Start your journey with ‘Mama’s Eyes’. Sonically it’s everything I’ve ever wanted to be. Lyrically, it’s my anthemic landscape.

Is there a visual world to what you’re trying to create?

In my world, music and dance are synonymous with freedom. The people surround each other

In school, what would you have been voted Most Likely To…?

True story! I was ‘Most Likely To be a talk show host’, but since then, I’ve been ‘Most Likely To be seen dancing randomly in public’, and and ‘Most Likely To throw all sides of my personality within 24 hours’

What ‘Little Monsters’-style name would you give your fans?

I’d like to call them METTEPHORS :)

Who would be your dream collaborator?

I would LOVE to collaborate with Robyn. She’s the Swedish Pop Queen whose album ‘Body Talk’ changed my life forever.

Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to this year?

More music! I have a bundle of tunes I’ve been waiting to release, but timing is everything and patience is the best virtue. I’ve been incubating and I’m ready to hatch, share, and let people enjoy the MetteVerse, lol.

We’re coming round for dinner, what are you cooking?

I’m bringing dessert. A lemon meringue pie with mile high meringue. I’ll stay up all night and try to convince the party to eat sweet before savoury!
