Amy Winehouse documentary to be shown at Cannes Festival

Asif Kapadia’s upcoming film ‘Amy’ will be given a special screening at this year’s event

Asif Kapadia’s upcoming documentary on the late Amy Winehouse has been confirmed to be shown as part of a special screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

According to Billboard, organisers for the event confirmed that ‘Amy’ will be shown at midnight, with a “musical accompaniment” provided by the singer’s record label Universal. ‘Amy’s general release in theatres is scheduled for 3rd July in the UK. A date has yet to be confirmed for the USA, though A24 have been confirmed as the acquiring company.

A blurb for ‘Amy’ states: “A once-in-a-generation talent and a pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense, Amy wrote and sung from the heart using her musical gifts to analyse her own problems. The combination of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most original and adored songs of the modern era.”

The first teaser trailer for ‘Amy’ was shared in February 2015, after debuting at Universal Music Group’s pre-Grammy Awards brunch. Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011. Watch the trailer for ‘Amy’ below.
